Zerubbabel
is a type of Christ who leads God’s people out of bondage, captivity and
confusion, and into freedom and liberty. “He whom the Son sets free is free
indeed” (John 8:36). Zerubbabel also restored the foundation of the Temple,
which lie in ruins, as well as restoring the worship and sacrifices (Jesus
restores the ruins of our lives – we are the temple). It was to Zerubbabel that
the prophet Zechariah prophesied over Zerubbabel, saying: “Not by might, nor by
power, but by My Spirit says the Lord of Hosts. Who are you, O great mountain?
Before Zerubbabel you shall become a flattened plain” (Zechariah 4:6-7a).
Zerubbabel is primarily mentioned in Haggai and Zechariah.
