Bible = The English form of the Greek name Biblia, meaning “books,” the name which in the fifth century began to be given to the entire collection of sacred books, the “Library of Divine Revelation.” The name Bible was adopted by Wickliffe, and came gradually into use in our English language. The Bible consists of sixty-six different books, composed by many different writers, in three different languages, under different circumstances; writers of almost every social rank, statesmen and peasants, kings, herdsmen, fishermen, priests, tax-gatherers, tentmakers; educated and uneducated, Jews and Gentiles; most of them unknown to each other, and writing at various periods during the space of about 1600 years: and yet, after all, it is only one book dealing with only one subject in its numberless aspects and relations, the subject of man's redemption. (Easton's Bible Dictionary.)

Canon = May be generally described as the “collection of books which form the original and authoritative written rule of the faith and practice of the Christian Church,” i.e. the Old and New Testaments. The word canon, in classical Greek, is properly a straight rod, “a rule” in the widest sense, and especially in the phrases “the rule of the Church,” “the rule of faith,” “the rule of truth.” (From Smith's Bible Dictionary.) Out of thousands of manuscripts, only 66 books met the stringent criteria of being Divinely inspired of God and were included in the Canon.

Counselors = Psalms 119:24

Covenant = An agreement between two people or two groups that involves promises on the part of each to the other. The concept of covenant between God and His people is one of the most important theological truths of the Bible. By making a covenant with Abraham, God promised to bless His descendants and to make them His special people. Abraham, in return, was to remain faithful to God and to serve as a channel through which God's blessings could flow to the rest of the world (Genesis 12:1-3). A covenant, in the biblical sense, implies much more than a contract or simple agreement. A contract always has an end date, while a covenant is a permanent arrangement. Another difference is that a contract generally involves only one part of a person, such as a skill, while a covenant covers a person's total being. (From Nelson's Illustrated Bible Dictionary.)

Love Thy Law = Psalms 119:165

Manna = Manna Heb. man-hu, “What is that?” the name given by the Israelites to the food miraculously supplied to them during their wanderings in the wilderness (Exodus 16:15-35). The name is commonly taken as derived from man, an expression of surprise, “What is it?” but more probably it is derived from manan, meaning “to allot,” and hence denoting an “allotment” or a “gift.” This “gift” from God is described as “a small round thing,” like the “hoar-frost on the ground,” and “like coriander seed,” “of the color of bdellium,” and in taste “like wafers made with honey.” It was capable of being baked and boiled, ground in mills, or beaten in a mortar (Exodus 16:23; Numbers 11:7). If any was kept over till the following morning, it became corrupt with worms; but as on the Sabbath none fell, on the preceding day a double portion was given, and that could be kept over to supply the wants of the Sabbath without becoming corrupt. It fell for the first time after the eighth encampment in the desert of Sin, and was daily furnished, except on the Sabbath, for all the years of the wanderings, till they encamped at Gilgal, after crossing the Jordan, when it suddenly ceased, and where they “did eat of the old corn of the land; neither had the children of Israel manna any more” (Joshua 5:12). They now no longer needed the “bread of the wilderness.” Our Lord refers to the manna when he calls Himself the “true bread from heaven” (John 6:31-35; 48-51). He is also the “hidden manna” (Revelation 2:17) (from Easton's Bible Dictionary).

Noah’s Ark = A vessel built by Noah to save him, his family, and animals from the Flood (Genesis 6:14-9:18). God commanded Noah to make the ark of gopher wood (Genesis 6:14). Many scholars believe gopher wood is cypress, which was noted for its lightness and durability and therefore was used extensively in shipbuilding by the Phoenicians. Noah's ark was 300 cubits long, 50 cubits wide, and 30 cubits high (Genesis 6:15) —about 450 feet long, 75 feet wide, and 45 feet high. The ark was constructed with three “decks,” or stories (Genesis 6:16). When Noah and his family and all the animals entered the ark, God himself shut its door to insure their safety against the raging flood (Genesis 7:16). In this way God sealed the judgment against the ungodly who had refused to heed Noah's warnings. When the waters subsided after the Flood, the ark rested on the mountains of Ararat (Genesis 8:4). In the New Testament, Jesus spoke of the Flood and of Noah and the ark, comparing “the days of Noah” with the time of “the coming of the Son of Man” (Matthew 24:37-38; Luke 17:26-27). The ark is a striking illustration of Christ, who preserves us from the flood of divine judgment. (From Nelson's Illustrated Bible Dictionary.)

The Vulgate translates incorrectly by testamentum, whence the names “Old” and “New Testament,” by which we now designate the two sections into which the Bible is divided. The two sections of the Bible is also known as the Old Covenant and New Covenant (from Easton's Bible Dictionary).

Torah = Guidance or direction from God to His people. In earlier times, the term Torah referred directly to the five books of Moses, or the Pentateuch. Moses told the people, “Command your children to observe to do, all the words of this law.” While the English word law does not suggest this, both the hearing and the doing of the law made the Torah. It was a manner of life, a way to live based upon the Covenant that God made with His people. The Torah, both then and now for Jewish people, should be seen as a total way of life. It requires complete dedication because it is seen as God's direction for living the covenant relationship (from Nelson's Illustrated Bible Dictionary).
