Types of Psalms

Types of Psalms

The book of Psalms is a collection of prayers, poems and hymns that focus the worshiper’s thoughts on God in praise and adoration. The book contains 150 psalms, which may be grouped into the following types or categories:

1. Individual and communal lament psalms, or prayers for God’s deliverance. These psalms speak to believers in moments of desperation and despair, when our need is for God’s deliverance.  Psalms of this type include 3-7, 12-13, 22, 25-28, 35, 38-40, 42-44, 51, 54-57, 59-61, 63-64, 69-71, 74, 79-80, 83, 85, 88, 90, 102, 109, 120, 123, 130 and 140-143.

2. Thanksgiving psalms, consisting of praise to God for His gracious acts. These psalms make us aware of God’s blessings and lead us to express our thanks with feeling and conviction. Psalms of this type include 8, 18-19, 29-30, 32-34, 36, 40-41, 66, 103-106, 111, 113, 116-117, 124, 129, 135-136, 138-139, 146-148 and 150.

3. Enthronement psalms, which describe God’s sovereign rule. Through these psalms we acknowledge God as powerful Creator and sovereign Lord over all His creation. Psalms of this type include 47, 93 and 96-99.

4. Pilgrimage psalms, which were sung by worshipers as they traveled to Jerusalem to celebrate the Jewish festivals. These psalms help us establish a mood of reverent worship. Psalms of this type include 43, 46, 48, 76, 84, 87 and 120-134.

5. Royal psalms, which portray the reign of the earthly king, as well as of the Heavenly King of Israel. These psalms can make us aware of our daily need to make Christ the sovereign Ruler of our lives. Psalms of this type include 2, 18, 20-21, 45, 72, 89, 101, 110, 132 and 144.

6. Wisdom psalms, which instruct the worshiper in the way of wisdom and righteousness. These psalms are especially appropriate in times of decision when we are searching for God’s will and direction in our lives. Psalms of this type include 1, 37 and 119.

7. Imprecatory psalms, in which the worshiper invokes God’s wrath and judgment against his enemies. These psalms can help us to be honest about our feelings toward people who have done us wrong and work our way through these feelings to a point of forgiveness. Psalms of this type include 7, 35, 40, 55, 58-59, 69, 79, 109, 137, 139 and 144.

8. Messianic psalms, which anticipate the life and ministry of Jesus Christ, the Son of David. Most of these psalms speak of Christ’s first coming when Jesus came to this earth born of a virgin, died and rose again, and these prophecies were fulfilled centuries after these psalms were written. Other messianic psalms speak of Christ’s second coming when He establishes His Kingdom on this earth. Messianic psalms include 2, 22, 34:20, 45, 69:4,9, 72, 96-99 and 110.

It is God's will that no one should perish (end up in hell), but that ALL should come to repentance.

For God so loved this world that He gave His only begotton Son, that whosoever believes in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

God did not send His Son into this world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him would be saved.

The thief (Satan the devil) comes only for to kill, steal and destroy. But Jesus has come to give us life, and life more abundantly, until it overflows.

I urge you to come to the Cross today and receive Jesus as your Savior and Lord. He will wash away all your sins and make you as clean and white as fresh snow.

Just pray this prayer and mean it with your heart:

Dear Lord Jesus (if you are not able to call him Lord yet, then just say "Jesus")

I receive You as my Savior and Lord. I give my life over to You. I believe that You died and rose again, and that if I call on the Name of the Lord I shall be saved.

I accept you into my heart right now, and confess that You are Lord and have risen from the dead and forever live to make intercession for me.

Thank You for washing my heart pure and clean and making me whole, and for giving me peace and joy in the Holy Spirit.

Thank You that now I am a new creature in Christ Jesus. The old has gone and the new has come.

And there is no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh (carnality and sin), but walk after the Spirit.  In Jesus' Name, Amen.

If you prayed this prayer, I believe you got born again and are now heaven bound and will be with the Lord forever and have eternal life. Your sins are now forgiven. You are accepted in the Beloved.

I would encourage you to find a good Bible based local church to help you grow in your faith, to learn the Word of God, to praise and worship Him, and to have fellowship with the saints.

Serving Christ is the best decision you will ever make.

God bless you!!!
